Introduction
How sports stars create national value is a topic worthy of investigation in sports science. Cristiano Ronaldo, with his exceptional career and public image, serves as a paradigmatic case for exploring this question. Given China’s strategic emphasis on campus football for youth development and cultural cultivation — a priority articulated in the Medium- and Long-Term Football Development Plan (2016–2050) — an analysis of Ronaldo’s multidimensional value to Portugal can provide valuable cross-national references.
Methods
This study adopts literature review and case analysis. Relevant literature was collected by searching core academic databases, including Web of Science and CNKI, using keywords such as “Cristiano Ronaldo,” “football stars,” and “campus football.” Based on this, the analysis examines Ronaldo’s contributions across four dimensions — political, economic, social, and cultural — and provides practical insights for the development of campus football in China.
Results
Ronaldo's contributions to Portugal are multidimensional. Politically, Cristiano Ronaldo has helped enhance Portugal’s international reputation and national image. Economically, his personal brand has significantly promoted tourism in Madeira and across Portugal. Socially, his positive media image reflects personal qualities such as professional ethics and family values, exemplifying positive social values. Culturally, his story of perseverance inspires young people in Portugal and strengthens cultural identity and emotional ties among overseas Portuguese communities.
Discussion
This study demonstrates that Ronaldo’s multidimensional value to Portugal is formed through a clear process: outstanding on-pitch performance, consistent perseverance, strong professional ethics, and positive media coverage, which together shape national emotional identity and a national symbol.
This offers important implications for China’s campus football: China can draw on this process to build an exemplary ecosystem of homegrown football stars. First, develop a framework centered on promoting virtues like sportsmanship and patriotism among local players, thereby cultivating sound social values in youth. Second, foster resilience among young people through the growth stories of local players. Third, encourage outstanding players to take part in campus and youth training programs, so as to strengthen young people’s sense of belonging and identification with football culture.
