Introduction:
This study centers on the question, "Can public welfare organizations promote social inclusion and sports participation?" It analyzes sports-related public welfare activities carried out by three representative organizations: the Cai Chongxin Foundation, the Yao Foundation, and the "Future of youth sport" project jointly implemented by Nike, the Chinese Ministry of Education, and the China Education Development Foundation. The research explores their mechanisms of action and actual outcomes.
Research Methods:
A comparative multi-case analysis method was employed. Textual analysis was conducted on publicly available sports project reports, evaluation summaries, and media coverage from the three public welfare organizations to extract information on their project designs, target groups, operational models, and claimed social effects.
Findings:
Firstly, the sports projects have different focal points. The Cai Chongxin Foundation focuses on the "Sports-Integrated Education Principal Program".The Yao Foundation supports youth development projects and builds public welfare platforms to draw greater attention to adolescents in underdeveloped regions, assisting their holistic development in areas such as education, sports, nutrition, and psychology. The Nike "Active Schools" project is dedicated to cultivating a sports culture within schools and innovating physical education.
Secondly, the promotion effects are significant and pathways are diverse. The sports projects of all three foundations have effectively increased sports participation among their target groups. The Cai Chongxin Foundation's sports education initiatives include the Sports-Integrated Education Principal Program, basketball scholarships, and the China Women's Football Support Plan. These efforts have involved 61 selected principals, impacted over 4,000 schools, engaged more than 165 schools in full-staff sports competitions, and awarded scholarships to 28 basketball players. Yao Foundation projects have cumulatively supported 6,388 rural schools, dispatched 8,292 volunteer teachers, trained 1,339 rural full-time and part-time physical education teachers, and benefited approximately 7 million young people in rural areas. The Nike "Active Schools" project has reached 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, benefiting over 11,000 schools, more than 13,000 physical education teachers, and over 5.5 million students. The "Boundless Girls" project has benefited over 800 schools and 220,000 girls, creating a multi-stakeholder collaborative force for public good.
Conclusion and Discussion:
This study indicates that Chinese public welfare foundations, through targeted sports projects, can effectively promote sports participation and serve as powerful tools for advancing social inclusion. Their impact lies not only in providing "opportunities" but also, through professional project design, in constructing inclusive "scenarios" and "support systems."
